Argentina in Three Parts: Mendoza

Argentina in Three Parts: Mendoza

My last destination in Argentina was by far my favorite. Argentina is famous for Pampas beef and red wine. If you think these two things go together better than just about anything else, you must visit Mendoza. The city of Mendoza is a 90-minute flight from Buenos Aires at the base of the Andes Mountains on the border with Chile is, in the heart of Argentinean wine country. Mendoza does not hustle like Buenos Aires, nor does it feel like the tourist economy of Iguazu Falls. Rather it remains as Argentina was. The city closes down between noon...

Argentina in Three Parts:Buenos Aires

Much has been written about the second largest city in South America, Buenos Aires, or BA, as it’s called in shorthand. It’s easy to see why. It is a city with its own unique personality and life. The (dirty, I thought) streets are filled with people, and the sidewalks with cafés. The Argentineans look to Europe for their model, and it shows, particularly to Americans like me. If you have any reservations about automobile travel, don’t take taxis in Buenos Aires. The subway is very inexpensive—just a couple pesos ($.50 U.S.)—and it goes...

Argentina in Three Parts: Iguazu

On a visit to Argentina too many people might be tempted to hit only Buenos Aires and skip the rest of a spectacular country. This is a huge mistake. Argentina has climates of rain forests to glaciers and everything in between. Let me first say that the food, particularly the copious beef and red wine, were inexpensive and amazing everywhere. I recently concluded a trip to there, splitting my time between three must-see destinations: Iguazu Falls, Buenos Aires and Mendoza. From the United States to Iguazu Falls is a long day to say the least,...

El Calafate: Argentina’s Glacier

I woke up early with the sun just rising over the expansive lake. Flamingos were busy picking their breakfast out along the shore. I could hardly believe there were flamingos here in penguin country, but I didn’t have time to admire the leggy pink birds. I was heading to Las Glaciares National Park today to see the famous glacier Perito Moreno. I was in El Calafate, after all, Argentina’s Glacier Capital. How could I miss the opportunity to visit the glacier that graces every top ten list of things to see in Argentina? The tour van headed out...

Sailing the BVI, Day 5

After a quick breakfast onboard, we headed for Jost Van Dyke where we anchored in White Bay. It was a beautiful day of sailing and I loved having the chance to practice my skills and help to teach my girlfriend the ropes, so to speak. Although after four days at sea, she was already getting pretty darn good. After anchoring, we took the dinghy ashore and hung out at the famed Soggy Dollar Bar. We had a really good time watching all of the other boaters sail or motor in and simply just hanging out enjoying each other’s company in the Caribbean...
