Tartu, Estonia, and Christmas

Christmas in Estonia Tartu, Estonia, is the First Country to Use a Christmas Tree Snow falling, children singing, and lights shimmering. This is the scene of a Christmas tradition set in the beautiful city of Tartu, Estonia. Three months into my eleven – month stay, I have become familiar enough with the city to know that my expectations, no matter how grandiose, will always be shattered by what Tartu has to offer. This Christmas season has already shown that it will not be any different. Living in the first country to use a Christmas...

Graveside Party in Setoland, Estonia

Graveside Party in Setoland, Estonia It was a celebration of death, I suppose. Or a celebration of life, or friendship, or something else. I was in Setomaa (the Setoland) in Estonia only a couple of miles from the surprisingly porous Russian border. I stood in the local cemetery and watched the local women, who were had been part of the same choir – for the last 48 years – set out a small tapestry in front of the grave of Liidia 1923-2001. Small squads of tourists heading to the palace in Kadriorg Park near Tallinn, each with a different photo to take. It is a mini-Versailles according to the locals. The former cottage of Peter the Great nearby houses a museum. The KUMU Art Gallery was the European Museum of the Year in 2008. The President’s pink house is there for all to see cyclists, sunbathers, walkers, people chatting on benches, duck watchers, beautiful blonds dressed in black without a hair out of place (even in the breeze sitting at cafes drinking lattes). There are...

“Bagging” Tallinn, Estonia

I felt like Alice falling through the rabbit hole as I walked into Tallinn from its port on the Baltic Sea. Or perhaps I stumbled into a time machine. The stone ramparts of this medieval walled village stand in stark contrast to the modern city surrounding them. Because I like to “bag” countries, as dedicated mountain climbers bag peaks, I was delighted when this little-known city in Estonia appeared on my cruise itinerary. Beyond that, I had few expectations for the day’s excursion. When I entered Old Tallinn through one of the centuries old...
