The European Fine Art Fair

Maastricht, March 27, 2011 – The European Fine Art Fair is widely acknowledged as the world’s most influential art fair. The fair, which is held at the Maastricht Exhibition and Congress Centre, closed on March 27th. The focus was on the fair’s extraordinary works of art from leading specialists around the world, but its impact on the local economy stretches far beyond the confines of the fair. “The City of Maastricht and TEFAF are inseparable and are of great mutual benefit,” the Mayor of Maastricht, Onno Hoes, said. “I very much look...

Surround Sounds: Cafe Haarlem

“Soul food in Amsterdam?” I thought. “Food, Music and More!” proclaimed the red script font. Intrigued and two months into my Netherland stint, I squeeze into the tight double doors, schoolbag in tow. Squeezing in, is frequent in Amsterdam. Doors are often skinny, a throwback to the city’s original taxation on width of property, not length. De La Soul plays on the speakers inside. I breathe easier. Good music earns points with me, striking like blows from a bat laced with good taste. If only the food tastes as amazing as the music sounds....

Surround Sounds: Cafe de Prins, Part Two

I never liked pea soup. I never saw the great joy in hanging out with peas warmed up in a bowl, waiting for something to happen; just doesn’t do it for me. However, I have been in Amsterdam for the past six months and built rapport with the staff at Café Prins, and as it goes rapport needs to be reciprocated. It is this rapport allowing the owner to feel it was safe to launch a “pea soup volley”. “You should try the pea soup my friend,” he said. “It is very Dutch and I know you want to enjoy more of the Dutch cuisine during your time here.”...

Surround Sounds: Café De Prins

Bzzz-eeypp! The door chime proclaims another patron joins the ranks here warm at the eight stool wooden bar. I look towards the window noting the continuously fallen snow and frost, yet it is still toasty inside the mellow confines of Café Prins. Actually, mellow doesn’t properly describe where you and nearby figures, melt into the walls, as easily as the12x14 paintings and photographs of winterized canals, displayed overhead and between tables, but you get the point; it’s low key. I recall my first time at Café Prins, August 26th, in the...

Amsterdam’s Aalsmeer Flower Auction

Posted by on 1:11 pm in Holland, Spotlight | 4 comments

At Holland’s Aalsmeer Flower Auction flowers are the language of everything: color, space, money and, of course, love. When I think how close I came to missing this unique experience, I cringe. Aalsmeer, a small town located just south of Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, is often called the flower capital of the world. It is the home of the aforementioned Aalsmeer Flower Auction, which is, according to the Guiness Book of World Records, the largest commercial building in the world. Twenty million flowers pass through here every day – no wonder...

Holland’s Keukenhof

Posted by on 8:30 pm in Announcements, Holland News | 0 comments

Where Keukenhof is situated now was a hunting area in the 15th century. Herbs for the kitchen of the castle of Jacoba van Beieren were also collected here; hence the name Keukenhof. The current park was a section of the sizeable estate of Slot Teylingen, with beautiful untamed bushes and dunes. After the decease of Jacoba van Beieren Keukenhof fell into the hands of rich merchant families. Baron and baroness Van Pallandt invited landscape architects J.D. and L.P. Zocher, designers of the Amsterdam Vondelpark, to make a design for the garden...
