A Taste of Italy, in Thailand

Plans change. Sometimes for the better . On a recent Asian cruise I discovered, upon docking at Thailand’s Laem Chabang, that my selected shore excursion to Pattaya Beach had sold out. Disappointed, I chose an alternative a short drive away, which promised a visit to a winery. Since I wasn’t aware Thailand even had a wine industry, I had visions of a rustic backyard shed and a few straggly vines. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Silverlake Vineyard was established by a former Thai movie star in 2002 and is a real surprise! Jumping on the...

Sukhothai, Thailand

There is a distinct freedom that is ever present when site seeing by bike. Maybe it is because having my own transportation allowed me to briefly escape the constant hammering of touts by the locals. During my latest bicycle trip, I explored the 800 year old UNESCO World Heritage site of Sukhothai, Thailand. Besides its other worldly temples that sat upon mirror-like lotus ponds, the main highlight was the megalithic Buddha of Wat Si Chum. Upon entering, I found several unlit incense sticks and a lighter that were on the main altar. I looked...

Giving Alms in Thailand

Giving Alms in Thailand

I washed my hands, wore a spotless white shirt and made sure my face was cleanly shaven. Hastily checking my cellphone clock, I grabbed my bananas, chose seven gnoh (for its religious and spiritual significance) and gingerly placed each item into a plastic bag. With my heart beat steadily increasing and sweat beads forming on my forehead, I proceeded out of my apartment and embarked on the first phase of alms giving—finding a monk. Just a month before, I was taught the proper way to give alms in my Thai cultural teacher training course....

Guide to Ethically Volunteering in Asia

Volunteering in the Philippines Even at seven o’clock in the morning the sun was riding high and strong over Tacloban City on the island of Leyte. From inside the colorful Jeepney amongst a jumble of spades, sledgehammers and wheelbarrows, a voice called: “Let’s Go Alan!” and our Filippino driver started the engine. From my perch on the roof I held on tightly as we bumped towards the seashore, where piles of debris stood as evidence of Typhoon Haiyan’s recent deadly visit. As a volunteer I was there to help clear rubble so the people of...

Same Same, but Different in Bangkok

“Same Same — but Different” in Bangkok So goes the saying on two-thirds of the T-Shirts for sale… Suvarnabhumi Airport at 1 am After a long flight over the gerrymandered International Date Line my plane approached Bangkok at one in the morning (+1 day). Although I was prepared for the heat and humidity I’d read about, leaving the air-conditioned comfort of the terminal my expectations were not only met but exceeded. I quickly learned there are three seasons in Thailand – hot, hotter, and extra hot, and my...

Canoeing Around Phuket, Thailand

“Lie as still as you can, lie as low as you can,” my guide whispered as he slowly navigated us into the weave of tunnels. I kept calm and still as I watched the cave close in on me, sharp rocks dangled inches from the tip of my nose. “This is too narrow. I am going to have to let some air go.” As my guide, Souk, gently deflated the canoe with his hands, I should have felt alarmed. The deeper we pushed ourselves into the limestone caves the further the canoe shrunk, and molded itself against the sharp rocks and squeezed...

Cabbages and Condoms, Bangkok

Cabbages and Condoms. Not exactly the most appetizing name for a restaurant, but upon learning about it from fellow travelers I was intrigued. The restaurant was located a little out of the way along a dark side street. Considering its name I became slightly suspicious, until a concentration of fairy lights eventually appeared like an oasis in a desert and I was walking into the most atmospheric restaurant in Bangkok. Cabbages and Condoms is a project set up to promote better understanding of family planning and to raise funds to support...
