Guo Qing Jie” Chinese National Day Festival
Date: Saturday October 1
Location: Yokohama Chinatown, Naka Ward, Yokohama City
Access: Approximately 5-minute walk from Motomachi-Chukagai station
(Minato Mirai Line).

A festival celebrating the foundation of the People’s Republic of China. A fair will be held with traditional Chinese on-stage performances featuring Chinese lion dances and other Chinese ethnic entertainments at Yamashita-cho-koen park in Chinatown. Following a dragon dance (3:00 p.m-4:00 p.m.), a lively traditional celebratory lion dance ritual will be performed and four Chinese lions will parade throughout Chinatown dancing and collecting red packets containing money (tokens of gratitude for blessing) hung in front of shops.

World Festa Yokohama 2005
Date: Saturday October 8 – Sunday October 9
Location: Yamashita Park, Naka Ward, Yokohama City
Access: Approximately 5-minute walk from Motomachi-Chukagai station and
Nihon Odori station (both on Minato Mirai Line).

The “World Food Stand Village” lets visitors enjoy representative dishes and beverages from a number of different countries, and stands this yearwill be serving dishes with the theme of “spices & herbs”. The event also features a fashion show introducing ethnic clothes along with representative music, a “World Bazaar,” street performances, traditional music and dance performances, and much more. Ojuya Buddhist Service at Komyoji Temple
Date: Wednesday October 12 – Saturday October 15
Location: Komyoji Temple, Zaimokuza, Kamakura City
Access: Approximately 10-minute bus ride from Kamakura station (JR Yokosuka Line); take a bus for Zushi station via Kotsubo and get off at the Komyoji stop.

This is a Buddhist “Joudo” communion service called “Nenbutsu hoyo”, and many believers and tourists visit the temple during this period. The precinct of the temple will be filled with a number of vendors and a garden plant fair on Thursday October 13 and Friday October 14 to represent Kamakura in autumn.

Shonan-Enoshima Autumn Festival & Enoshima Dragon Boat Race
Date: Saturday October 15 – Sunday October 16
Location: Enoshima and the mouth of Sakai River at Katase Beach,
Fujisawa City
Access: Get off at Katase-Enoshima station (Odakyu Line).

The festival features street performances, an Enoshima street performance contest (starting at noon on Saturday October 15), a live music show, and much more. A total of fifty-four teams will participate in the dragon boat race in which two dragon-shaped canoes each with ten participants race against each other (from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the mouth of Sakai River at Katase Beach).

Sontoku Matsuri” Festival
Date: Saturday October 22 – Sunday October 23
Location: Sontoku Kinenkan (Sontoku Memorial Hall), Kayama, Odawara City
Access: Approximately 15-minute walk from Tomizu station and Kayama station (both on Odakyu Line).

The festival is held at places around Sontoku Kinenkan located next to the birth house of Ninomiya-Sontoku, a prominent 19th century Japanese agricultural leader (also known as Ninomiya-Kinjiro in his youth).

Saturday October 22: A lobby choir recital and a performance of the Sagami Puppet Play
Sunday October 23: A Japanese drum performance, a demonstration of Shaulin-zi martial arts, a lobby concert, an exhibition area for hand-made toys, a free green tea service, sales of agricultural products and sweets to celebrate Ninomiya-Sontoku, and much more. Time: 12:25 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday October 22, 10:00 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. on Sunday October 23

Odawara “Sakana Matsuri” Fish Festival
Date: Sunday October 30
Location: Local public fish market, Hayakawa, Odawara City
Access: Approximately 5-minute walk from Hayakawa station (JR Tokaido Line).

The festival features sales of fresh seafood, a fish preparation workshop, a demonstration of fish-paste cake making, an ice sculpture demonstration, an Odawara Houjodaiko drum performance, a performance by the “Odawara Youth Wind Ensemble” brass band, Sagami Bay Kids Aquarium, a prize draw, and much more. Time: 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Flower Information For Pampas Grass: Best viewing period: Between late September and late October
Location: Sengokuhara Plateau, Sengokuhara, Hakone Town
Access: Approximately 50-minute bus ride from Odawara station East Exit; take a bus for Togendai and get off at the Daigatake stop.

The whole foot of the Sengokuhara plateau will be covered with a sweeping golden pampas meadow. Temporary free parking is available.
