With the Estonian octogenarians of Setomaa.
I started In The Know Traveler in 2004 with the sincere desire to continue to see the world and inspire more people to do the same. I figured that if more of us were traveling we would discover that we had more in common than not with others. Maybe we could see each other for our similarities, rather than our differences. Over 4000 articles later, this message has not changed. If anything, it is more important than ever. I do hope you will continue to find your inspiration and commitment in exploring your world right here at In The Know Traveler.
We travel because we are supposed to know each other.
Questions You Should Ask
ITKT, as we like to call it, is an online travel magazine dedicated to international travel and cultural exchange. We do this through personal stories, video and photos covering 189 countries around the world. And we have been doing it since 2004 — so we know a thing or two about travel 😉
I started ITKT in 2004 with the sincere desire to get more Americans passports in their hands and traveling. Secretly, I hope that if we all traveled more, we would realize how much we have in common as people, as humans. Perhaps, we would not have to fight with each other so often. I know, the pipe dream of world peace is a long shot, but it is one pipe dream worth pursuing. Until then, let’s get to know each other. It is another dream worth pursuing.
Honestly, I was listening to Raspberry Beret by Prince when the idea of changing my life and building this site began. So, this is my small homage to a truly talented musician. Lots of yellow (I think Prince went through a yellow phase) and green (I just like it), too.
I am. My wife and I are shooting for 100 weddings in 100 countries. You can check us out at In The Know Bride. Honestly, it is one of the better relationship choices I have ever made.
I suppose what makes ITKT different is we publish writers from all over the world, while managing to not be a corporation. We are real people writing about real travel. We have very few ads because we like to do what we want.
Yes, I have a program that teaches you how to travel for free without having to be a blogger. Blogging is fine for some but no everyone wants a career of taking selfies and posting photos on Instagram. There is a much better way to do it. Sign up for our newsletter for more.

Steve Smith inherited the wanderlust and has always needed to see what's around the next corner. In his college years he enjoyed many memorable forays into Mexico sleeping on beaches under the stars, but today that's all changed.
Since 2006 he's contributed stories and photographs to In The Know Traveler, and in 2014 he assumed an editor role. Published both in digital and print formats, his international assignments have taken him to the Middle East, Asia, North/Latin/South America, Europe, and the Caribbean. Together with his co-pilot, today his global road travels intersect with digital storytelling and dynamically add to them with space-age mapping technology.
And now for our latest stories…

I had first visited the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) in October 2016 as a day trip from Dandong in China. I've always liked to explore places where few others dare to go, so I was very excited about my first trip (not to mention a little...
Imagine my surprise when I heard that one of the largest cultural events in Cameroon, my newest home, would take place just after I arrived, and in my city of Douala! The Ngondo water-centric festival is normally held throughout November but would culminate on the...
As the fireworks exploded over Kalajoki Finland, I reflected on the past two weeks of travel, how easy it had been, and how far away CoVid-19 had felt. The Finn's don't wear masks, they don't queue outside of shops, and when I asked them about social distancing and...
The glass sculptures were astonishing. Just once in my life I had visited a glass blowers' studio, accompanying my daughter's school study trip. Yes, I had seen the demonstrations of the glass being melted, blown and shaped into a delicate form. But nothing...
My eyes were bleary after the two-ish hour flight from Lima, but more so from the 3am alarm earlier in the day. I had just landed in Iquitos, Peru with my family – husband Tim, 11-year-old daughter Taylor, and 9-year-old son Wyatt. Along with my family, I was on a...

August 8, 2022: People ask me here sometimes, as they often do of foreigners everywhere, where I'm from. "America," I reply. Then they ask about the state. They usually offer guesses like California or New York. I disappoint them. I reluctantly supply the answer,...

I don't know what day it is anymore. Time is something marked as the sun passes through the sky and then it is night and the dogs start to bark, and then it is light again. My world is three colours, the blue vast sky, green dense jungle, and red sticky soil....
Gorgeous beaches and relaxing vibes are two things that an ideal Island holiday is comprised of. This is exactly what I anticipated before visiting the Indian Ocean gem, Seychelles, a couple of years back. And what the island of Mahe gave me was at par with my...
