Niyaz, Bene Bene And World Music
Bene Bene by Niyaz
"From your door of benevolence, cast your generosity upon me
Don't let me mix into the world of matters
Overlook my rebellion, show compassion
Take me, O friend, to my goal "“ the ultimate destination
Take me, O beloved, take me
Take me, O friend, to my goal "“ the ultimate destination"

And so go the lyrics to the fabulously enchanting song Beni Beni by the Middle Eastern/World/Trance/Electronic band Niyaz (Farsi for "yearning"). It's as if the longing for union with the infinite is reaching through your speakers to grab you and carry you off into a world of both desire and fulfillment simultaneously. But here's the catch: the above lyrics are a translation. The song is sung in Turkish by the ever-alluring Iranian vocalist Azam Ali and it doesn't matter that you can't understand them. Azam Ali's haunting and pensive tone becomes an instrument of the god's and we are left with no choice but to follow it wherever it leads us. The feeling of confident longing simply gets through to the listener without any effort whatsoever. We understand even without understanding. The track supporting Ali's vocals by multi-instrumentalist Loga Ramin Torkian and producer Carmen Rizzo summons visions of an ancient middle east that is mysterious, romantic and erotic. The pulsating beats and pedal point bass gives this track a certain hypnotic element while the stringed instruments of Loga Ramin Torkian provide a flavorful amount of tension and harmony which makes the track extremely danceable yet thoughtful and sweet enough to meditate upon into the deepest depths.
Lots of Great Tunes from Niyaz
There is much that is written about the musical careers of the members of Niyaz and I shall leave it to the reader to do a Google search and discover more if they so choose. Rather I would like to invite the reader to listen to Beni Beni while enjoying the romantic embrace of a lover, while sitting and meditating upon a candles flame or the evening sky, or while doing any other thoughtful activity where music can be used to push you over the edge towards a higher place. That's what this music does for me. It may just do the same for you.
