The following statement has been issued by the Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau as of 12:34 p.m. on August 21, 2007:
Hurricane Dean has passed over the Yucatan Peninsula where it made land fall yesterday at approximately 50 miles from Chetumal, Quintana Roo, and 225 miles south of Cancun. Cancun only experienced moderate rainfall and gusty winds.
Cancun International Airport is open and operational.
Most visitors remain in the destination's Hotel Zone along the beach and continue to enjoy their holiday. Since 2005, the majority of the hotels have been rebuilt and strengthened to withstand strong hurricane force winds.
"The lessons we have learned since Hurricane Wilma have been evident in our preparations for Hurricane Dean. The entire destination reacted with professionalism in a timely manner to make Cancun a safe haven," said Arturo Escaip, Chief Officer, Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau.
