Spain Cuisine Celebrated at Event
With less than two months to go to the gastronomic event of the year in Madrid, its
programme is brimming with suggestive and appetizing new offerings. Held from
January 19 to February 3 2013, Gastrofestival is organised by Madrid Visitors &
Convention Bureau in collaboration with Madrid Fusión and offers an array of
activities and culinary experiences in the city. This annual event is the perfect
opportunity to savour good food and enjoy the event’s ties with various artistic
New features in this fourth edition involving more than 300 establishments and
institutions include “Route for the Sweet-Toothed”, “Colombian Coffee Route”,
“Gastronomy in Music” and “Menus by Elle”. Also taking part is the Prado Museum
who will join the programme for the first time this year.
Thanks to this initiative, Madrid will once again become a genuine feast for the
senses, where gastronomy and culture go hand in hand and everyone can discover
the best attractions available to both visitors and locals. Gastrofestival 2013 will
feature a six-course menu comprising: “Sensory Experiences”, “Gastroculture”,
“Gourmet Madrid “, “Gastrofashion”, “Gastrohealth” and “Enoculture”.

“Gourmet Madrid” will feature two tempting new offerings: the “Route for the Sweet-
Toothed” to discover the best bakeries in the city, and the “Colombian Coffee Route”
which provides a journey through that very special aroma and flavour. Coffee lovers
who refuse to go without a good cup of their favourite brew will be able to enjoy
everything from cocktails, snacks and sweet and savoury breakfasts to tastings and
A new addition to “Gastrofashion” is the incorporation of “Menus by Elle” in which the
décor of the twenty or so restaurants taking part will share the spotlight with the food
they are serving.
Artistic Banquets at the Prado
“Gastroculture” will have a couple of interesting surprises of its own. The Prado
Museum will take part for the first time in the programme dedicated to painting,
offering an educational itinerary called “Artistic Banquet”, with tours looking at
paintings that reflect the importance of food in art. The tours will take place on
Wednesdays at 11am and Thursdays at 5pm from January 8 to 31 2013. In addition
the Prado will hold a conference with chef Darío Barrio on January 27.
Cultural activities will include a section dedicated to music in which to enjoy live
bands in several Madrid clubs. Music will also take pride of place during the second
edition of Enofestival, which is held as part of “Enoculture”.
Photography, film, theatre, books, music…
“Sensory Experiences” will feature the same routes, tastings and ephemeral
installations as previous editions. Photography, film, theatre, books, music and, in
particular, paintings – which will be exhibited in over twenty galleries and museums –
are the main ingredients of “Gastroculture”. The relationship between literature and
gastronomy will have its moment at the Centro Sefarad Israel with a photographic
exhibition of José María Escudero Ramos’ work on Sepharad wine.
“Gourmet Madrid” will feature guests of honour at “Dinner with the Stars” as well as
the range of activities already mentioned. Thanks to its previous success, we will
once again have the chance to enjoy the culinary delights of chefs from Madrid
Fusión at the same price as last year: 75 euros.
The price of set menus at various distinguished restaurants throughout the city will
also remain at the same price of 25 and 40 euros. “Degustatapas” will continue to
offer a tapa and beer for three euros, and those who prefer wine can enjoy the launch
of “Rioja in our Favourite Bars”: a tapa and a glass of wine for six euros.
Gourmet Shops and Cooking Schools
During this coming edition there will once again be discounts at some of the capital’s
main gourmet shops, kitchenware stores, cooking schools and cocktail bars. The idea
behind Madrid Visitors & Convention Bureau’s initiative of highlighting the
involvement of culinary professionals in the city of Madrid is not only to promote
business and boost the number of visitors during the first month of the year, but also
to strengthen the image of Madrid as a culinary capital.
The Web and Gastrofestival Sponsors
Gastrofestival is an example of how a public-private partnership enables the Madrid
City Council to develop projects to revitalise the economy and boost tourism.
American Express and Mahou sponsorships together with the collaboration of Lavinia
and Elle have made it possible to turn this coming edition into the most ambitious
Gastrofestival to date.
American Express is participating for the third consecutive year, reiterating its support
for the catering sector as a key industry in the Spanish economy. Mahou, who has
been present since the very first edition, will be participating at concerts as well as
continuing with DegustaTapas and the set menus.
The Gastrofestival 2013 programme will be available from December 5 at a minisite
created by esMADRID.com, the official tourism
website of the city of Madrid.
