The Mirage volcano, an icon of Las Vegas since the hotels opening in 1989, is undergoing a major renovation. The project began this month and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Wet Design, the company responsible for The Fountains of Bellagio, is leading the design team.
The Mirage volcano is one of the most photographed features in Las Vegas. With its burst of fire and erupting lava, the volcano established itself as a must-see attraction even before The Mirage officially opened on November 22, 1989. News coverage at the time showed tourists stopping their cars on
Las Vegas Boulevard
to watch during the initial testing of the volcano.
The current volcano is actually an enhanced version of the original. In 1996, new water, fire, sound and lighting effects were added.
Details of the new volcano design will be released at a later date.
