Heading north from Dunedin turn right at Evansdale after the first motorway section, a windy road takes you right along the coast overlooking the Pacific. Coastal road passes through a small fishing village of Karitane with has one of the most spectacular lookouts in the country.
The coastal road then returns state highway 1 after Karitane until Wainakarua , which is about another 30 minutes…turn right at the “Mill House” to take a breath taking coastal drive to Kakanui and onto Oamaru. The road hugs the beaches and windswept coast line the whole way.
Once you get to Oamaru be sure to head to Whitestone Cheese factory – 3 Torridge Street. Where you can view cheeses being made the traditional handmade way in the mornings.
