(CHURCHILL, MANITOBA, CANADA) – A new five-day summer tour takes you by train to Canada’s far north and introduces you to the flora, fauna and history of one of North America’s most unique towns – Churchill, Manitoba – for less than $1000.
The itinerary takes you on a 1,000-mile journey by rail from the modern city of Winnipeg through towering boreal forest, tundra and remote communities to the shores of Hudson Bay. It also takes you by tour boat to view the pods of diminutive Beluga whales that congregate in the mouth of the Churchill River by the thousands.
The five-day, four-night “Churchill Summer Escape” is offered by The Great Canadian Travel Company, North America’s foremost experts in travel to “The Top of the World” – and is priced at only $962 per person.
Highlight of your visit is a half-day boat tour to view pods of Beluga whales as these magnificent, playful mammals migrate along the coast of Hudson Bay. Literally thousands may be in the mouth of the Churchill River at any one time. Boats are equipped with onboard hydro phones that magnify the vocalizations of these whales. The Beluga are small whales that are extremely vocal—sounds that prompted early whalers to call them “sea canaries.”
Your tour boat makes a stop for an interpretive tour of the historic Prince of Wales Fort, a massive stone fortress where you can immerse yourself in the history of the Hudson’s Bay Company and the fur trade of the 1700s.
You’ll also have time to discover Churchill’s historical and cultural legacy. Explore the town and visit local attractions such as the renowned Eskimo Museum and the Churchill Northern Studies Centre. You’ll learn about the colorful history of this fascinating outpost of civilization at the edge of the frozen tundra and flat muskeg of Canada’s northern wilderness.
Cost of this trip is $962 per person, based on double occupancy. The package includes one way transportation between Winnipeg and Churchill by train and one way by air; two nights’ accommodations in Churchill at the Bear Country Inn; transfers in Churchill, plus a half-day boat tour. Taxes are extra. The single supplement is $129. Accommodation on board the train will be confirmed in coach seats, but upgrades to berths or a cabin available upon request.
There are departures of this program on Sundays and Tuesdays throughout July and August.
